AUDIO / VISUAL LIVE PERFORMANCE - INSTALLATION
Artistic practice / Research
‘Terugblik’, the 2023 release from Shoal under the Tilburg label The Something Something, offers a lush, contemplative sonic journey and experimentation with ambient music, blends extended synth tones and organic sounds to immerse the listener in emotionally charged sound worlds that derives from past memories and fragments. These memories are re-interpreted, crafting a dreamlike state akin to déjà vu that is deeply inspired by the zooming in and out of natural environments through film and collages. The audiovisual is rich in textures, details and dynamics, researching for the tactile, the moist, the slippery, the shimmering, the crispy and the earthy.
The visual material contains footage filmed during different hikes (Italy, Portugal, The Netherlands, UK, South Africa). I approach walking as a method of sensing, observing, collecting and archiving, thus the act of filming the environment at the human and micro scale (through the use of a macro lens) becomes a process of internalisation.
Found footage of satellites images bring the perspective to the macro scale, noticing the connection between the similar patterns and relations that are present at these different scales.
The audiovisual project exists both as live performance, premiered and FIBER Festival 2023, and as a vertical-video installation, which was presented and the renowned Amsterdam club De School, during Minimal Collective art & club night at De School during ADE 2023. Here, the organic sounds and visuals beautifully contrasted with the industrial-looking room of De School.
