AUDIO / VISUAL LIVE PERFORMANCE - INSTALLATION
Artistic practice / Research
With Terugblik (Dutch for ‘retrospect’), the latest release from sound artist and producer Shoal (Kenny Kneefel) under the label The Something Something, was born the audio-visual collaboration with visual artist orah.
The EP offers a lush, contemplative sonic journey through the Utrecht-based sound artist’s memories. Result of years of experimentation with ambient music, the musical collection, comprised of seven reworked tracks, blends extended synth tones and organic sounds to immerse the listener in emotionally charged sound worlds.
Shoal and visual artist orah explored the fragments of these memories, crafting a dreamlike state akin to déjà vu. Fluidly moving through the sonic & visual storytelling, the audiovisual performance was rich in textures and dynamics, researching for the tactile, the moist, the slippery, the shimmering, the crispy and the earthy, and fusing films and collages that zoomed in and out the natural environment.
Terugblik AV was performed live and premiered at FIBER Festival in May 2023 during an evening of immersive audio-visual experimentations.
In October 2023, at Minimal Collective x De School club & art night during Amsterdam Dance Event, the audio-visual collaboration acquired the he form of a vertical-video installation where the organic sounds and visuals beautifully contrasted with the industrial-looking room of De School, giving the ravers a moment to rest from the dances.
