LIVE VISUALS / VJ - LIGHT DESIGN
Commissioned
Inspired by light and scenography design, visuals making is applied to the big scale. The qualities of a space are researched, manipulated and directed in relation to the show it will host.
By using the visuals on one or multiple screens as a source of light, different colours, shapes and dynamic are employed to augment a club night or a dj set. Drawing from personal experiences as a dancer and dj, music qualities such as tempo, rhythms, textures and climax are some of the inspirations and the inputs through which the visuals are operated, both manually (as in hand-controlled based on personal interpretation) and reactively (as audio-input operation and reaction programmed in the software).
Although the result is often abstracted (to meet the requests of the client) the starting point of the visuals are often found or self-filmed footage. Coming from a through image research and moodboard, the video material is then accurately selected because of its meaning, storytelling, dynamic or composition qualities. It is then altered and manipulated according to aesthetic choices.
For house music sets, including the one of Kerri Chandler at DGTL, found footage of New York City house dancers were imported into Touch Designer and manipulated through custom VFX. Each VFX’s has several parameters that can be controlled to create variety during the set.
For the Future Intel take over of the Vincent van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, I was asked to visualise the 2-hour downtempo, leftfield and ambient set of Cardboard Lamb and Kleingeld.
The visuals, inspired also by Van Gogh’s expressionist style of painting and natural landscapes, use a variety of self-filmed footage that are manipulated and textured live.
The visual software interface is custom-programmed in collaboration with Daniele Imani Nobar.
